DigiTech is an American company that manufactures digital guitar effects. The company is known especially for its DigiTech Whammy, first manufactured in 1989, which made foot-controlled pitch shifting effects possible. It is also known for JamMan loopers, the Time Machine digital delays, "Legend" line of guitar signal processors and RP series of effects processors, which were popular among beginners and amateurs due to its relatively low cost.

The company was acquired in 1990 by Harman International Industries (Lexicon, AKG, Dbx, Crown, JBL, Studer, Soundcraft and others).

DigiTech’s hit of all times is a foot-controlled pitch-shifting pedal called Whammy that was first released in 1989. The name came from the sound that emulated using of vibrato ("whammy") bar on a guitar. It’s interesting that the first version of the pedal is still the most sought-after among all other versions. The reason is said to be in a different, “the very same” tone that Pro Artists like David Gilmour, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, The Edge, Tom Morello, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry and a long list of others have. I cannot confirm if it is true or not, but Ángel Ontalva - a good friend of mine and active Whammy user – agrees with that. The up-to-date models are Whammy DT and Whammy (5th Gen) that were launched in 2011 and 2012. There is also a couple of stomp-boxes utilizing the Whammy technology that might be interesting for Ambient guitarists: Whammy Ricochet and The Drop.

Another line of pedals popular with looping performers was a JamMan series of loopers (not to be confused with an old Lexicon JamMan). I’ve noticed that JamMan loopers are not seen often on Ambient guitarists pedalboards. I can only guess why. There were pretty much functional issues reported with some of the older versions. Perhaps other manufacturers managed to adapt faster for ever-changing market demands improving sound quality, reliability and functionality of their equipment.
