Featured videos: Ambient guitar, Drones and Soundscapes

This page features some of my videos that share the ideas and principles of Ambient guitar techniques highlighted in “How to Play” section of this resource. However my vision of Ambient guitar music goes beyond the common idea of ambient swells, drones and soundscapes. You can read about this vision in “Ambient Guitar Approach”.

Soundscape #18

Gear used:

In this video I wanted to make a long relaxing and contemplative soundscape as a basis for later guitar improvisation.

There are several tips in this video that will hopefully give you ideas how to play ambient guitar: presets for Strymon TimeLine, BigSky, Roland GR-33 and some peculiarities of my guitar sound.

VG-99 patch I used in this video: “VG-99 Pitch2 Dly.g9e”. Use VG-99 Editor or VG-99 Librarian to upload it to your VG-99 from here.

If you play an acoustic instrument with a piezo pickup Fishman Aura is definitely worth buying. It recreates the sound of an acoustic instrument as if you don’t plug it in Line, but record it in a studio with a microphone.

One thing I’d like to talk about is a pick. Most of us play with a plastic pick. I used to do it for year. The other day a good friend of mine who is one of the best Russian stone-cutters (and a great guitar player too) called me and said he cut several guitar picks from Mongolian agate and Siberian nephrite. They were amazing! Since that day 90% of the time I play guitar with picks I use them.

Gem picks are not universal. You have to make corrections in your guitar picking technique. I personally found them stunning when playing Nylon. They sound much more solid than plastic and don’t have that ringing effects when you play Steel because it is Nylon and it is soft. Try them!

You can listen to / buy this track on my Bandcamp page.
